Support and Guidance

To help all students during their time at Retford Oaks Academy, we have a defined system of support to enable every individual to reach their potential and feel safe.

Our pastoral system is organised into vertical tutor groups, with all students being part of one of four Houses. Each academic mentoring group contains students from all year groups. The group meets each morning to provide a consistent support network. Each group has a dedicated academic mentor providing leadership, guidance, and support to all students. Older students are encouraged to take on responsibility for mentoring younger members of the group as part of their personal development. 

Supporting students with Special Educational Needs is important in ensuring their progress and achievement. Our Personalised Learning Team works with students to develop appropriate plans to engage them fully in learning. Some students who require more targeted support will be placed in our Nurture group. This small group of students has a dedicated teaching space for a proportion of their lessons with specific teacher and a classroom support assistant. 

Our ‘Gifted and Talented’ programme supports and stretches our high performing students. These students are monitored by dedicated staff to ensure that their learning is suitably challenging and stimulating in their field of excellence, and the group accesses external opportunities to develop personally, for example, through visits to Universities.
