AIMS

Students gain a firm grounding in the application of Computer Science including programming, hardware, networks, algorithms and data representation. We also teach how to use ICT to solve problems and to gather, analyse and present information.

Our staff encourage all students to commit to independent learning and ensure that support materials, in the form of help sheets, web pages and video tutorials, are available.

Students are encouraged to keep their files organised and to save work with suitable filenames. This is an important skill which becomes essential when GCSE work is started.

All students have a school email address together with cloud storage space. This can be managed out of school to enable students to share work between school and home.

WHAT YOU WILL STUDY

GCSE ICT

GCSE ICT draws upon knowledge and experience gained from earlier in the school and can be opted for in Year 10. GCSE ICT consists of two units, with one being an extended controlled assessment unit which covers all of the fundamental ICT areas such as desk top publishing, graphic creation, web creation, databases, spreadsheet modelling, sound editing, animation and word processing.

The other unit is an external examination which covers the main areas of ICT theory such as data communication, mobile devices, online safety, e-commerce, online safety, social networking and computer networks.

GCSE Computer Science

Computing and Computer Science is now counted as a science as part of the English Baccalaureate. After having some experience of Computer Science theory and programming in Year 7 and Year 9, students can opt to join computing in Year 10.

The Computing GCSE comprises of three main units, two of which are controlled assessment (Coursework) and one examination taken in Year 11. 

Students will study a wide range of subjects focussed around the mechanics of computers and the inner workings and programming. As part of the course, students will learn about processors and memory, binary, hexadecimal, computing standards, HTML and CSS, input and output devices, little man computing and programming using Python.

CLUBS

There are homework clubs which run every lunch time in the ICT rooms. Students can access these clubs to complete homework, catch up with class work or improve coursework.
